Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. She was raised by both her grandmother and mother. She is an only-child. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school while also working at two different job. She hoped to become the high school's English teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left school after three years of study and became a teacher's assistant. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word performer and performing live at poetry readings. Then she teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. Through a Roots show, she revealed herself as an artist. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable performance experience. She was the first signing artist to Hidden Beach Recordings. Hidden Beach Recordings label.
